Energy saving tips

There are many ways to save money on your bills by saving energy in your home, and many of them cost no money at all.

Here are some tops tips for saving energy in your home.

  • Fancy a cuppa? Only boil the amount of water you need. Three-quarters of British households overfill their kettles, wasting a total of £68m each year.
  • Careful use of your kitchen appliances could save you around £40 a year. Set your washing machine at 30C and only use your tumble dryer when the weather isn't suitable for drying your clothes outside. To reduce condensation, cover pans with lids when cooking and close the kitchen door.
  • By turning down your heating thermostat by one degree you could save around £65 a year.
  • Insulating your hot water cylinder and any exposed pipework around it could save you around £60 a year.
  • A family of four could save around £75 a year by installing an eco-showerhead. Closing the bathroom door when bathing or showering will reduce the amount of condensation.
  • By turning off your lights and appliances when not in use the average family could save between £50 and £90 a year. For the average household, replacing all bulbs with lower energy bulbs could result in a saving of around £60 per year.
  • Keeping the draughts out by insulating your loft could save you up to £180 a year. Draught proofing your doors, windows, floors and chimneys could potentially save you a further £75 a year.
